One of a kind pieces, the unique outworking of the imagination

Living water in the in-betweens

The in-betweenness of covenants, the idea of covenant as a coming between and keeping a connection. Wells and springs are part of a sort of circulatory system between earth's surface and deep aquifers, like veins carrying blood through the body. They embody the "in between". The land of Israel itself is referred to as "the land between," (considering its geographical and historical position). Perhaps it is magnificently purposeful that the "in betweeness" reaches its pinnacle at the intersection of God’s covenant and a man’s well. In either case, a channel is etched for the water to flow, for the promise to manifest.
It’s found in the time between the garden and the new heaven and earth, as the LORD was passing between pieces of Abraham’s sacrifice, of His people between mountains, and even the reconciling between Jew and Gentile, (the setting for this painting is in Samaria), and then the cross between heaven and earth.
The woman left the well and the efforts of her jar because she found the source, the One who was going to send the Spirit, who would quench her thirst and make the way for her to connect to God and His promises. For our current in-between time Jesus sends His promised Holy Spirit, who is with those who believe Him, connecting us in good relationship with God.

An artisan well is one that is placed in a hydraulic conductivity aquifer (deep underground, water flowing within rock, directly over bedrock), and this is from where natural springs are sourced. This is the type of water under Sychar/Shechem in Israel. (In preparation for this painting I watched several videos of wells being drilled and the way the water gushes up so much distance when they finally hit it is powerful).
